Jose Ramirez vs Richard Commey Preview - Winner Next In Line For Super-Lightweight World Title Shot?

As the junior welterweight division opens up, former unified titleholder Jose Ramirez is looking to make a statement on March 25th. But Ramirez will have to get through a hard-punching Ghanaian contender in order to get back what he once had.

He’ll be taking on Richard Commey on Saturday, March 25th in a 12-round bout which will headline a Top Rank on ESPN+ card at the Save Mart Arena in Fresno, California. This will be the Fresno-area native’s second consecutive fight at the Save Mart Arena and his seventh overall.

Ramirez (27-1, 17 KO), who formerly held the WBC/WBO titles at 140-pounds, has been on the comeback trail since losing an undisputed title fight against Josh Taylor in May 2021. Since then, he’s picked up one win: a unanimous decision over Jose Pedraza last April.

Commey (30-4-1, 27 KO), who held the IBF title briefly in 2019, is coming off of a 10-round draw with Pedraza last August. While the former titleholder has only two wins in his last five fights and hasn’t been too active, he’s faced some of the toughest competition available, from Vasiliy Lomachenko to Teofimo Lopez to name but a few.

Saturday’s matchup would likely put the winner back into the title mix at junior welterweight, as both have a high ranking with the WBO. Commey is ranked at no. 8, while Ramirez is ranked at no. 4. It is a compelling fight on paper and one that could prove to be huge in terms of world title shots in the next 12 months at super-lightweight.
