Preview: Edwards vs Mama
By Nick Pratt
Sunny ‘Showtime’ Edwards (16-0, 4KO) will make the first defence of his IBF World Flyweight on Saturday 11 September when he takes on Jayson Mama (16-0, 9KO) at the Copper Box Arena, London.
Edwards won his world title back in April this year when he outclassed Moruti Mthalane over 12 rounds and won via a unanimous decision on the judges’ scorecards (120-108, 118-111, 115-113).
On the same night that Edwards captured his world title, Mama fought Romshane Sarguilla in a scheduled ten-round bout, but the corner of Sarguilla deemed their fighter in no position to continue and retired him from the contest after round eight.
Mama, nicknamed ‘Smasher’ has a 56% knockout percentage, stopping nine of his 16 opponents and is ranked number three with the IBF and number nine in the WBO rankings. The Filipino fighter will be fighting for the second title of his professional career, after picking up the vacant WBO Oriental Youth Flyweight title in his ninth fight against Michael Camelion.
The bout will see Edwards return to the Copper Box Arena for the first time since his points victory over Marcel Braithwaite, where he claimed the vacant British Super-Flyweight title in 2019.
