PREVIEW: Robeisy Ramirez vs Isaac Dogboe
After losing his highly-anticipated professional debut back in 2019, Cuba’s Robeisy Ramirez has been on a mission to get things back on track. Now, after racking up 11 wins, he’s on the verge of capturing his first world title.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist will be fighting for the vacant WBO featherweight strap against former super bantamweight titleholder Isaac Dogboe on Saturday, April 1. Top Rank Boxing will be putting on the event, which will be shown on ESPN+ from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Ramirez (11-1, 7 KO) is a product of Cuba's incredibly sophisticated amateur boxing system and won gold in the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games. So, much of the boxing public was shocked when he came up short in his professional debut. He’s rebounded well so far, but none of the names on his resume are on the level of Ghana’s Isaac Dogboe.
Dogboe (24-2, 15 KO) has also been on the comeback trail since losing two fights and his super bantamweight title to Emanuel Navarette in 2018 and 2019. The former titleholder won his next four fights, his last two coming over notable contenders Joet Gonzalez and Christopher Diaz.
The winner of Saturday’s matchup will be added into a group of beltholders that includes Rey Vargas (WBC), Mauricio Lara (WBA) and Luis Alberto Lopez (IBF)—all from Mexico incidentally. So, lucrative unification bouts could be waiting for either Ramirez or Dogboe.
