Preview: Serrano vs Bermudez

Updated: Mar 23

The month of March has been a busy one for NBC Sports Network’s “Ring City USA”, as the new venture has scheduled three shows in Puerto Rico. Their last event of the month will feature one of the most accomplished fighters in women’s boxing in the main event.

Seven-division champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano (39-1-1, 29 KO) will defend her WBC/WBO featherweight titles against three-division champion Daniela “La Bonita” Bermudez (29-3-3, 10 KO) on March 25 at Plaza del Quinto Centenario in San Juan.

Serrano, 32, would have a hard time calling any weight class “home”. And while there are plenty of high-level fighters who jump weight classes consistently, no one does it quite like Serrano. An example of this would be her winning the WBO junior welterweight title (140 pounds) in 2018, then dropping down SIX weight classes to win a belt at super flyweight (115 pounds) the following year. She then earned what may be considered her signature win in 2019, outpointing Heather Hardy to win the WBO/WBC titles she currently holds. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Serrano was also able to pick two quick up two quick wins in 2020.

Bermudez, 31, has accomplished plenty in boxing herself, winning world titles at super flyweight, bantamweight and junior featherweight. However, her resume lacks some of the more recognizable names that are featured on Serrano’s. While she only has 10 knockouts out of 35 fights, Bermudez has been finishing her opponents more frequently as of late, winning three of her last five by knockout.

There isn’t too much more Amanda Serrano can accomplish at this point, but on Thursday she will be looking to keep her victorious streak intact and extend it 26 consecutive wins. However, this is a much more meaningful fight for Bermudez, who will be looking to score the victory of a lifetime, become a four-division champion and to earn more respect and recognition within the boxing world.
